The Association of Internet Researchers is among the premier international associations for students and scholars in the field of internet studies. We are an inclusive community and encourage membership by researchers ranging from cultural studies through social sciences to informatics, and beyond. Founded in 1998, AoIR organises academic conferences that annually bring together the best and brightest researchers and practitioners in Internet research.

Membership in AoIR connects you with our vibrant community of scholars, gives you access to our archive of past conference papers, and enables you to take advantage of discount book and journal discounts. It also supports the ongoing work of the Association.

Benefits
Membership in AoIR provides support for the Association and gives you a voice in its affairs and its future. Members enjoy discounted registration fees to AoIR’s annual conference, networking opportunities, and exclusive access to virtual talks and workshops. Additionally, all AoIR members are able to set up a free account on https://aoir.social Mastodon. We strongly encourage all AIR-L list subscribers to support AoIR by becoming a member.

Dues
Membership of AoIR is relatively inexpensive compared to many professional and scholarly associations and brings with it several benefits, as well as being your way of helping support Internet scholarship and research. We would welcome you joining the association and helping us to grow and promote studies of the Internet. If you’ve been a listserv member for a long time but haven’t joined the org, consider doing so now!

After over a decade of maintaining the same membership rates, AoIR’s Executive Committee has unanimously voted to adjust our dues structure to better support our growing community and expanding offerings. Starting February 15th, 2026, the annual membership dues (in US dollars) are as follows:

If you’re renewing your membership for 2026, you can do so now at the older rate and save! And if you choose lifetime membership, you will never pay an annual fee again and will enjoy the member rate on conference and other events in the future.

Why Dues Are Increasing
As a growing organization, AoIR is dedicated to continuing to support its global membership community. The cost of running the Association has increased, while our dues have remained the same for many years. After conducting a study of peer organizations, AoIR’s Executive Committee has unanimously voted to increase member dues. Even after this change, AoIR’s member dues are still well below those of comparable international associations.

Where do your dues go? AoIR has welcomed two professional staff, provides robust conference travel support for graduate students, extends media services (including our long-running listserv and social media server aoir.social), hosts our annual conference in new locations around the world, runs annual Flashpoint events, and plans to expand our offerings with members-only virtual talks, lectures, and workshops. Your dues help make this possible and support students and early-career scholars through workshops and travel grants.
