AoIR is happy to announce the third roundtable and sixth event in our lecture series:

Ethics in Internet Research
When: 21 August 2026 @ 16:00 – 17:30 (UTC)
Location: Zoom – Link provided upon registration.

We bring together long-standing AoIR members Charles Ess, Anja Bechmann, Alice Marwick, and Michael Zimmer for a roundtable reflecting on the evolution of ethics within AoIR and the field it has shaped.

The session takes up the question of what ethics has meant for AoIR as the internet itself has changed: from the association’s first guidelines in 2002 to the 2019 publication of Internet Research: Ethical Guidelines 3.0, which extended earlier frameworks to address the ethical stakes of big data, AI, and the research lifecycle as a whole, including the protection of researchers themselves. The researchers will talk about how each iteration of the guidelines responded to shifting technologies, platforms, and research practices, and what it means to conduct ethical research in the field of Internet research.

The lecture will be 45 minutes long with 45 minutes of Q&A and discussion with the audience.
