SPECULATING AT THE END (?) OF TIMES

Department of Social Sciences, University of Naples, Federico, Italy • June 15-17, 2023

The Association of Internet Researchers and the Department of Social Sciences, The University of Naples invite PhD students and junior scholars for three days of reflection on and discussion about future visions of politics, technology and their intersection. The Association of Internet Researchers 2023 Flashpoint Symposium will be , 15 June 2023, Naples, Italy. Registration for the symposium is available here.

The general mood in the early 21st Century is that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of our current socio-economic conditions. Yet we will have to do precisely that, since things are starting to change very quickly at the level of climate change, technological development as well as political and economic transformations, while our theoretical and political imaginaries are struggling to keep the pace. The purpose of this summer school is to begin to think about social theory tools for comprehending the possible direction of these changes.

The summer school consists of a one day AoIR Flashpoint Symposium (Thursday, June 15th 2023), during which keynote speakers and panelists will discuss themes central to speculations on technology and politics in the anthropocene. This will be followed by two days of roundtable discussions of pre-submitted papers (June 16-17th). The roundtable discussions are primarily oriented to PhD students and junior scholars. If you are interested in submitting a paper, please see further details under ‘participate’. (Deadline is May 15th). AoIR will be awarding a number of travel scholarships of up to €300.
