Ethical Dimensions Of Web Archiving
The Web: finding, reading, archiving [116]
Ford, Sarah, The most obvious structural difference between PortalChat and Joe' WebChat is the difference in size. PortalChat provides over a hundred chat rooms; Joe' provides one teen room, three or four general rooms, and three or four 'adult' rooms. At any given time, PortalChat hosts more than 100 times as many users as Joe' WebChat. There are also structural differences in the ways that each chat server deals with issues of identity, particularly gender identity. When a new user creates an account at PortalChat, they are required to indicate their gender. The only options are 'male' and 'female' and there is no way to keep this information from being visible to any other user of PortalChat. PortalChat' structure reinforces the importance of gender and the existence of a male-female gender dichotomy. Joe' WebChat, on the other hand, institutionalizes the 'A/S/L' (age/sex/location) convention so commonly found in chat rooms by including age and gender (as provided by the user) in a 'header' to every message the user sends. This information is not required, however (it can be left blank); users who did not indicate their gender or age were never questioned. Additionally, Joe' offers three options for gender: male, female, and alien. In this way, the chat server facilitates the breakdown of a mandatory gender dichotomy. Joe' also adds the option of a user-defined 'tag line' that is included in the header of every message, giving users another tool for self-presentation.

"I found two basic types of gender presented in chat rooms on both servers: hypersexualized and 'everyday' identities. Hypersexualized identities were far more likely to be feminine identities. The majority of these hypersexualized identities, however, were presented not by 'real' interactants, but by \0xD4bots : automated 'interactants' whose purpose in the chat room was to advertise web-based businesses. Most often, these businesses sold pornography; the second-most-common type of business was dating services. \0xD4Bots were only present on PortalChat (probably because it is so much larger than Joe' WebChat). The 'everyday' identities ranged from people who did not emphasize their gender identity to women who flaunted their bodies, claimed to be 'THE bitchand men who demanded to know where all the hot chicks were and otherwise presented typical hegemonic masculinity.

.
