Elearning around the globe: a look at recent international trends

Abstract

The great expansion of eLearning in many different countries has produced important changes in the panorama of higher education institutions. Alliances - consortia and partnerships - among different universities in the same and among different countries have offered online courses in undergraduate studies, continuing education, and, more recently, in PhD programs. Universities and professors compete in an increasing global market offering educational products to consumers all over the world. In this paper, we draw a map of eLearning that includes recent trends in the way in which university alliances and partnerships around the globe are being shaped and we anticipate some of the transformations and challenges that eLearning may suppose for the new university system in terms of power relations and cultural diversity.
