The September 11 Collection: Archiving an Emerging Web Sphere

Abstract
The September 11 Collection was commissioned by the U.S. Library of Congress as part of its statutory mandate to preserve born-digital materials of national significance. Its creation was made possible through a first-of-its-kind collaborative effort involving the Internet Archive, the Pew Internet and American Life Project, the WebArchivist research group, and hundreds of individual web users from around the world. The story of the collaboration, (from the perspective of the Library of Congress), the challenges encountered in identifying and archiving an unexpected and rapidly changing web sphere, and the legal, ethical and technical issues that were surfaced by the creation of the September 11 Collection are the focus of this presentation. Lessons learned and the Libraryıs plans for future web collections will also be presented.
