Infonomics is defined as the interdisciplinary science studying the digitisation of society. The International Institute of Infonomics is an interdisciplinary institute of research. The aim of the Infonomics is to develop and bring together relevant international knowledge and expertise to study the digitalization of society from a variety of perspectives, ranging from anthropology, linguistics, law, economics, mathematics, to communication science, sociology, and business studies.

The University of Maastricht founded the International Institute of Infonomics in collaboration with international institutes such as Merit and the McLuhan Institute and a network of Dutch educational institutions. Infonomics is also active in the field of higher academic education and will develop new courses for a variety of different curricula and students: economics, business studies, law, cultural sciences, communication, informatics, psychology to name but a few.

The Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) is an academic association dedicated to the advancement of the cross-disciplinary field of Internet studies. It is a resource and support network promoting critical and scholarly Internet research independent from traditional disciplines and existing across academic borders.

The association is international in scope. One of its goal is to provide an interdisciplinary and interprofessional organization for promotion of scholarly and critical research into the social, cultural, political, economic and aesthetic aspects of the Internet. (source: AoIR web-site).
